I've just flashed my brand new Vodafone w880i to generic and my Start/End Calls buttons still work normally, the web-browser button on non-branded phones is the Call Start button and the quick-menu button on non-branded phones is the call end button. I've uploaded a photo of my w880i to demonstrate:

At the moment there are two way to resolve the problem of keypad for vodafone mobile. On vodafone branded mobile (K800 and w880) operator key and quick menu button are instead call and end-call button.
For people who wants to debrand his mobile, they should sustitute the keypad with a not-branded one or find the right patch to change the keypad map as in the vodaphone mobile. For people who wants to unlock, they just need the vkp for their vodafone firmware.
I unlocked my w880 (vodafone branded) patching the W880_R8BA024_MAIN_VODAFONE_AI_RED52.mbn. On my K800 instead I preferred a unbranded software and I substituted the keypad because I don't have the right knowledge about the keypad map and how modify it.

Is it possible to do an unlock on the downloaded generic firmware then flash it on to the phone? Will that make it unlocked?

The last operation has to be "apply the patch together with main" so you'll have an unlocked mobile. As we know, patch unlock is just a temporary unlock because we just modify the main firmware so that it don't see the locks. In any patch unlocked mobile flashing a new firmware will relock again unless we patch it.
