i can be using any feature of the phone and then all of a suddern the phone screen goes black and then slowly the phone will start to work again when the screen actually comes back on it doesnt say any network but the handset will regain the full functionality

I think there is something wrong with phone's firmware. I suggest you to reflash the phone completely(MAIN, FS, custom pack) following one of flashing tutorials(you find them in Tutorials and Guides section).
the unlock patch did not actually work
What is the problem exactly? Tell me more about this...

i have tried two different firmwares main fs and custom packs now and i get the rebooting with both which firmware would be the best to use thanks

as to the unlock patch not working well i applied it and all went well when i press the >*<**<* the menu shows 5 locks all with the number 5 at the side of the and they all look open so i thaught it had workde but it will only accept the sim card from the original network which is orange so the unlock patch didnt actually work

I found your other thread... The W580_R8BA024_MAIN_GENERIC_LA_RED52 is good.
If you tried with two distinct firmwares, then it is a hardware problem... Maybe there is a contact error between battery and phone.

About SIM lock problem: if in >*<<*<* menu all padlocks are open then your phone is unlocked. What you mean about "it will only accept the sim card"? What is the exact error message?

when i put a sim card in other than the orange network eg t-mobile the phone says insert sim or press demo to view a demo of the phone. it is as tho it is not unlocked at all even tho it appears to be so i do not know what the problem is really why it shows as unlcoked but not really being unlocked

Sounds like firmware to me. If you put a simcard in and it still says "Insert Sim" then either your firmware isn't right, or your phone may have a hardware fault.
