    my w580i

    newbie here!

I've had my w580i for about 2 weeks now. Its connected with AT&T. So far I have upgraded the removeable memory to 1gb for music purposes. I have had some issues from time to time with the phone reading the memory card. Sometimes you have to remove it and put it back in to access various files. I have been researching various forums and such for information purposes about the phone and found that numerous people have some issues with the phone. issues to use Mp3's as ringtones and something about flash menus.

Personally I haven't had those problems. Atleast that I know of. I have created various ringtones using Audacity editor. Its a great tool which allows editing of various sound files. To use Mp3's as ringtones I edited them and file transfered them to the phone using both USB and Bluetooth connections. I don't currently have a internet package with my subscription so I'm unable to do WAP transfers.

As for flash menus. If im correct on my lingo and terminology I believe this is when you are able to see and use animated backgrounds and such? I have various themes which I have downloaded which have animated backgrounds and they work properly on my phone.

I haven't installed or done any firmware flashing that I know of. Only installation of pc-suite which I dont even use anymore. I'm still working up the courage to access and edit the firmware. But would like to become more knowledgeable before doing so.

There are a couple things which I would like to see if are possible to do. One being I would like to extend ringtone time to longer then 30sec. aswell as messaging alerts. reason for this being is that I dont carry the phone on my person while at work. And sometimes I dont hear the ring if its only 30sec long. Secondly its a AT&T branded phone which there are games on it which are locked. I was able to file transfer some .jar game files to the music folder and install them that way. Also the AT&T preloaded music files are annoying in the walkman section.

Overall I like the phone. Only a little bit of tweeking needs to be done. I just downloaded SEUS which I dont know if I need to do, but the XS++ tuitorial says to do it so I wanna be sure. I haven't decided if I wanna use XS++ or FAR to do my editing. I still have more research to do.

Well I crossed a major hurdle I think. I did some researching and decided that if I was gonna mod my phone I would do so starting with XS++.

After downloading FAR I was reading that it was gonna be prompting me for information that I didnt currently know about my phone and that I would have to use XS++ or SEUS to find out. So I just went with XS++ anyhows.

Well after extracting the XS++ file program with a extractor and starting the application I attempted a connection with my phone. first try was a failure due to no usb drivers installed. second attempt gave me the following information.

...... good? bad? anyone know where to go from here?

my phone turns on and works properly so I would say it was a success....

I'm interrested in doing some more modding but I need to gain some more experience with XS++ a little more aswell as code.\

    Firmware/patches

I'm using XS++3.1 and I was able to connect the phone using it and now know my FW ver.R7AC001. EROM 52/RED.

I haven't found any patches listed for a w580 with R7AC001. Do I need to upgrade/downgrade firmware to use patches? Why isn't there any patches for my firmware?

If I do have to upgrade/downgrade my firmware what is all envolved? I do understand that I will have to find the actual firmware and download it. will I have to convert my new firmware for XS++3.1 to use it? will I need add'l plugins for the XS++? I did however use XS++ to make what I think is a backup of what my phone which is in a file on my desktop label backup. The file in it is listed as my phone model and my IMEI as a bin extension file.

Can XS++ use this file the way it is to restore my phone if anything were to happen?

    Sorry. im new at this.

I think R7AC001 is the branded firmware version and that is why there are no patches for it. In order to use XS++ to flash/update your firmware, you need to install the USB driver which it appears you have done already.

You have 2 options really for firmware, R6BC002 and R8BE001. R8BE001 is the latest but has the light illumination bug that has plagued all firmwares after R6BC002. I use R6BC002 because there is no light bug with it. R8BE001 doesn't have many patches though, so you could flash R8BA024 which is the second most current firmware. It still has same bug.

Yes, you will need to download your the firmware of your choice and will need the FS file, MAIN file, and custpack.

Depending on your wireless provider, i would also suggest editing AMR to disable AMR-HR if you have AT&T as the sound quality is no good in my opinion.
