If you flash your phone with unbranded firmware (generic), you just get debranded phone, but the phone will still be locked to network, so you still need to unlock them.

If the phone is suppurted by the app then probably there will not be any problems

an alternative method is to contact your SP and ask them for the unlock code. Some charge. Some dont. I paid orange UK £20 to unlock my K800. Well worth it and its not relocked after flashing.
