    w580 and "Emerg. Calls Only"

    hey.

i have a w580i through ATT (debranded, thanks partially to this forum). just an oddity that i find interesting.

my desk is in the basement of a large office building. i moved over to ATT from VZ, with VZ i got no signal at my desk and i was pretty much expecting the same with ATT. strange thing tho, sitting at my desk i get 4 bars and the message "Emerg. Calls Only". curious, i looked in the user's manual and it states that you will get this message if you're getting signal on a network you're not allowed to use.

we have plenty of wifi coverage, but i would be very surprised if this phone is picking up 2.4ghz wifi signals and is able to recognize and use them.

so i figure there's some other GSM provider in the area, perhaps with a tower so close it's able to penetrate all the way to the basement here.

so my question is, any idea how i can figure out what network the phone is seeing?

    thanks.

i have 4 choices, New Search, Select Network, Search Mode, Preferred Network. 1 just takes me back to the main screen, 4 is grayed out. if i set Search Mode to manual i can go to Select Network, but it only lists ATT as an option.

On my unlocked w580, I can see both T-mobile and AT&T under Select Network. May be your phone needs to be unlocked to list all available networks.

This happens with me all the time when I get out of the elevator and walk to my apartment. About 30 seconds after I get into the apartment, Emerg. Calls Only disappears and I am back on the network. I always assume its some sort of interference, but I am pretty sure its not from another cell tower - at least not in my case.

try to somehow change the IMEI - we here in Latvia had a programme on TV, which told about this "error" - when two identical IMEI's "meet" in one network - one of them is "banned" - if you debranded your phone - I prefer - you used FW from this site, which someone has posted  - change IMEI and everything should be okay. ;)

inform me (PM) about your progress, or even success! ;)

You do realise that changing the IMEI is illegal in many countries? Better make sure about the laws in your country before you attempt this advice.
