I just wanted to confirm that the phone will benefit from the headset as far as reception goes right? In other words, the phone will utilize the headset's extra reception when it is connected right?

The headset serves as radio antenna. It is the wires from the headset that acts as an antenna.
With the patch radio without headset, you could listen the radio, but the quality wouldn't be as good. In fact, if you put the finger on the connector, the reception is improved.
