I just want to detail what I did to get this to work on a K610i (which was formerly a K610 From Orange UK)

The phone CID was 49, and I initially reflashed it with the R1GB001_MAIN_GENERIC firmware RED49. At this point none of the instructions in the initial post worked.

The key seems to have be to use xspp 3.1 first and when it asks you to upgrade phone CID to 52 choose yes.

I then could flash the phone with the R1GB001_MAIN_GENERIC firmware RED file. From this point onwards I followed the section named "B. How to apply the generated patches to DB2020 CID52 phones:" which was successful.
