Rogers W580i - cant use mp3 as ringtone!

Just got a W580i from rogers, very nice design phone. However, after I play with the phone, I found out that beside the stupid Rogers music player (yes, in addition to original SE music player, it has two music player in the phone), Rogers firmware also locked the feature using MP3 as ringtone :mad: this is sooooo cheap, it just allow you to use their downloaded ringtone.... (I wonder if it will against the anti-monoplize law or something like that)

My question is: beside flashing the phone, is there anyway to unlock this feature, i.e. using mp3 as ringtone?

I got a w580i from AT&T last week and was befuddled with the same problem for the first few days.

But then I searched a bunch of times online and found out that if you clip your mp3s down to 30 sec, you can use those as ringtones.

You should look into drm packager from sony ericsson. The rogers firmware should allow files that are in this format to be played as ring tone. Give it a shot, worth a try.

With the w580i on Rogers, you cannot use mp3s as ringtones.
You have to buy ringtones from their site.
I have tryed downloading the drm rights tool, creating mp3's that are less than 30 secs, downloading ringtones from sites...

Nothing works. I think you have to flash fw to generic to allow mp3 as ringtone on rogers

That is not cool :( the last thing I want to do is to flash the phone, if I "brick" it, I m sure rogers won't give me any warranty.
maybe a stupid question: if update with SEUS, will it updates the firmware to work with mp3 ringtones?

If you are talking about The sony update servie that comes with the phone (im pretty sure you are ;) ) then no, it does not work. The seus only updates a small part of the firmware, and your w580 should be up to date. I ran it and it said mine was uptodate.

oh, and if you want to mess around with flashing, use xs++ to make a backup of your factory firmware. that way, if you do mess up, you have something to go back on...

Im sure sony has worked with rogers an at&t to update the firmware and keep the branded parts there....

you need to totally debrand, as in flash the main, the filesystem and a cust pack

THEN you can use the mp3's and ringtones. (also flash menu's with 5 minutes of work)
it is possible to do it for free using xs++ and FAR

or you can pay using wotanserver.. the choice is yours really...
