    Unlock W580i - Rogers

    Hey Just checking in here.

Apparently even after you unlock and debrand this phone, its still not possible to use MP3's as ringers because of some DRM nonsense.

Can anyone clarify what the issue is here? I've been searching and all I can find is that you'll nbeed some cracked DRM and then you have to copy it to a seperate directory and all this other jazz.

I just wanna know... if I go through the rigmarole of unlocking and unbranding, can I just drag and drop MP3's into the ringtone directory (or something to that effect)?

Oh and BTW just to verify I am supposed to use the R6BC002 correct?

I see there's two american ones... since I'm canadian im guessing that's the closest it'll get, but is there a major diff between the two american versions??

lol im sure thats nonsense, dont see why it should change anything!
and you can use a different firmware to what is on your phone i think, but if you would like to use the same type then find out what firmware is currently on your phone.

if you flash ur W580 with another firmware (lets say Hong Kong ver.) then mp3 ringtones feature would be unlocked and u could use mp3 as ringtones, unlock simlock is possible now but it's expensive

yes. it's possible. i flashed my Rogers w580i with Generic America 1 firmware and am now able to select mp3s. place your mp3 songs under /music/ringtones on your m2 card

Hotness! Okay thank you so I'll go ahead and give it a shot with the debranding.

My only main concern was that I would go through all of the procedures and end up in the same boat....

Now i'm excited about this phone again :D

As long as you flash GENERIC MAIN + UNBRANDED FS and GENERIC CUSTOMIZE then you will remove MP3 restrictions on ROGERS and FIDO phones.
Just yesterday I flashed my friends fido Z710 after he started having problems with missed calls, and he was able to use MP3 as a ringtone and SMS notification, unlike before with rogers' custom firmware in the phone.

I think someone else already mentioned this. There is a ericsson drm packer you can use to "lock" the mp3 and then use the myphone explorer to transfer it to the root dir of the phone. I tried that and was able to use mp3 as my ringtone.

May I ask what do you buy from wotan's website? It is also the first time for me to do this. Is there anything else besides the firmware?

the easier route is to use far manager and just copy a new customize.xml that allows you enable mp3 ringtones and then just do a full reset on your phone... there is no need to flash the Main firmware
