    this is a real big feature in the states, when i was in NYC there was always people using there handsets like a walkie-talkie, think they should look into it, should shift some more handsets that side of the ocean!

    I don't think there's a way of doing this by software, it depends on the GSM operator, unless you find a way to use the phone's transciever and use it directly. But this will probably be possible only in a small area, limited by the GSM operator's retransmitters (or am I wrong?)
    Although this would be great :) but the phone companies won't have profit from this.

    glx, you are wright, for such systems you need the operator. As far as i know in countries that use PTT, it is supported by the operator with charge.
