Red face WOW have I f**ked up! Please help! - very funny :(

    Hi Everyone!

I recently got a 2nd hand W800i with an unresponsive joystick - it worked, but only when pressed hard.

I ordered a new joystick on ebay but couldn't work out how to de-solder the old one.

In my frustration (and here comes the funny bit)

I put a tiny drop of light Olive Oil down the joystick :o

Anyway, this seemed to fix the joystick and everything worked perfectly for 3 days.

Then, today, the phone started freezing and switching off whenever I press the joystick button in too hard.

I have now shook the phone hard and dabbed up any specks of oil with cotton buds.

It has improved, but still turns off when pressed sometimes!

    What can I do?

I have Isopropanol and Acetone, a soldering iron, circuit-writer pen and a spare joystick.

Should I use the above cleaners on this?

What kind of (mineral) oil SHOULD I have used?

Will applying the right kind of oil displace the cooking fat!

How is the cooking fat affecting the phone anyway?

Please help, I feel a total idiot!

you should have used WD-40, I used it on my brothers K700i joystick witch worked only up and left. Now it's working every direction and works just as new. be carefull to hold the phone upright so the liquid won't flow towards the screen, a drop is enough.

I never changed a joystick, I don't have the tools to do that, I only said a way to fix/clean the joystick. Many people fixed their joystick with WD-40.

good thinking batman, with the oil, only prob is u never used the right type of oil, my dad was explaining me about different types of oil as i had lubricated my hair clippers with olive oil and they went all sticky and gooey after a few days, so i can imagine the base of your joystick, so some oils are mineral some vegetable, dunno which is which as i cant remember, but i do know that WD-40( as recommended) or 3n1 household oil ( for cycle chains, door hinges etc etc) are the correct types (mineral im sure). if i was you i would dismantle the fone down to all the component parts and clean of any traces of sticky oil away insert 1 drop of 3n1 or a tiny skoosh of WD-40. to joystick pivot mechanism. desoldering embedded circuitry is really dodgy unless you have a hot air solder station etc to get it 100% and that costs a bomb. you will find some usefull info on messing with circuits on one or two of the UK cable hacking forums like unlockers.co.uk as when doing boxes we sometimes need to lift IC's that were never intended to move EVER and dump them in a programmer clean them up and resolder onto board, thats a mission, but acheivable. just some ideas for u mate, hope it helps. good lux
