Sony ericsson update? Plz HELP!

I have a C510 and I can't get it to start in phone mode! It only works in file transfer! I need the stuff (sms contacts etc) that I have stored in the phone (not memory stick) so I can't update it through the sony ericsson update manager! What I want is: Either get my sms and contacts out of the phone some way or update the files needed to start my phone properly so that I can back my stuff up at my PC! I'v spent hours over my pc but nothing! Plz help guyz
