#8 key on W350 isn't working

My grandson's W350's #8 key won't work. To dial a # the 8 key won't work unless you hit the 5 key first, (i know strange), in text mode the 8 key won't work at all. I called SE support, and they said to update the software. I can't get it to work. I have d/l the update svc., and after pressing the #2 key and connecting the usb cable, it just sits there for a few minutes then the PC screen goes back to the beginning of the update svc. I have tried to run as admin (windows vista here), and tried to run in compatibility mode for xp. NOthing. Anyone else have this issue. Would hate to send the phone in.

the "C" just turns the phone on to update you have to press #2 key and plug in, and nothing happens

nope just press the 2 button if that doesnt work try 2 and the * button

oh i guess i'm blind, you need to press 1 for W350, i already know that but i don't know why i keep saying press c. well, just a small mistake. Press 1 and connect your phone

tried the #1 key, nothing...gonna try it by the web over the air
