    Service provider unlock code

I have heard that I could contact my service provider (AT&T) and tell them that I plan to use my phone overseas and need my phone unlocked, and that they will give me some sort of code that will allow me to use other networks overseas.

Apparently, they give you some sort of code (PUK?) that will allow you to use the phone overseas. Does this mean the phone is unlocked?

okay then its not a PUK code, I know they give you some sort of code that allows you to use the phone on a different network.

Does that mean it is an unlock code?
