A friend bought an unlock code from ebay and unlock his z750a. The only info he provided to the seller is the IMEI. Does this mean the unlock code can be calculated? To unlock an A2 phone, usb cable is not really necessary?

That depends. Some operators can have codes, for example AT&T.
Honestly I don't know if it works for all brands.

Yes, I know the carrier has unlock code for every phone they sell. But is the guy selling on ebay an AT&T employee?
