W380i question

I've a W380i since few days and I'm just wondering for what the little sensor at the left corner below the screen is intended for... :confused:

look the sensor beside the camera is for the "gesture control" that you can silence the ringtone when someone is calling you and the other one beside the screen is for adjusting the screen brightness adecuately to the light around!

I've read about the gesture control in the manual, but nothing is reported about the light sensor.
Nice feature.
