Try to press # and * at the same time. This would turn off the screen immediately when in standby. Don't know if it would work with your phone while shooting video. Just try it.

    # and * dont seem to turn off the screen of my w550i. which phone are you using that can turn off the screen in the way you said in your post?

it really be cool to be able to turn it off especially when taking call in the dark while walking in the streets, its dangerous where i'm from and this might just safe my phone from being stolen
