Basic info needed on file system of an AT&T Branded Phone

Hi. I am a 'newbe' here and at all this fancy souping up that you other fellas are doing, but I need some help. I have a United States AT&T branded w580i. I am having trouble accessing files with several eBook and text readers like Libris, MTTextreader, etc. When I try to search or locate a readable file nothing appears. The best I've been able to gather is that this is because I need to set permissions for the app to do this. But, when I try to set permissions to read or write user data I am told that that "no permissions granted". I think, from the reading I have done here, that I will need to debrand the phone in order to be able to grant permissions to access the files. Is this correct? Is there a way to grant permissions without debranding? If not and I have tio de-brand the phone will I still be able to use my AT&T service or will that be altered?

I am an old fogie and don't really care about having all the fancy bells and whistles like my 21 year of grandson might. I just want to be able to read and write to my files. If I decide to debrand I understand that I will need to backup my GDFS. What I don't understand is if I need to send the phone back to AT&T for warranty repair will "flashing " the back up of the original GDFS retund my phone to it's original at&t branded condition? I think I understand the debranding process (even if I don't undertand all the terms and abreviations used), I'm just unsure abot how the AT&T service is effected and can I return the phone to it's original configuration if necessary for warranty reasons. Thanks in advance for any help one can give.

To set permissions for Java applications you can use the patch to remove all java security restrictions. You can find it in the download section.

If you flash your phone you will still be able to use ATT as your service provider.

If you restore your GDFS, it will NOT put your phone to the original ATT firmware.

The ATT service is NOT affected in any way.

    Hope this helps!

Question: What is the name of the patch and do i have to have 'credits' to get it?

Question: Is there any way to backup the AT&T branding so it could be restored later? Or is my only option to intentionally "brick" the phone before sending back to AT&T for warranty repair?

The ATT service is NOT affected in any way.

Yes it was very helpful and I very much appreciate it.
