i have a w580 and i tried everything to find out too..
it was confusing because one person will say one thing, then another person says the opposite..
i personally came to the conclusion that it cannot be done yet by users at home (becuase its CID is 52 ,and its a db2020 or something like that and it hasent been hacked yet)..
but people were saying it can be done online, so i went and checked and at wotanserver.com it cost be $10 Canadian(7 euro) to de brand it.
it was really simple and came with clear instructions and only took 10 mintues. so personally i suggest you do that and save your self the trouble .(as i looked for 2 days for a solution before paying someone)
anyway just my two bits

well that's just it by now cid52 and db2020 should be compatible with xs++... but to be sure i started this thread so people who did it can make a tutorial so for once there is a topic and a good solution...
ps : but i will consider to do it with wotan... it's safe and fast idd... now i just have to find someone with paypal...
So just to confirm... the wotan server method allows you to nopw use MP3's as ring tones etc...? Are the ugly Rogers flash screens gone?

u can use xs++3.0 or setool2 lite 1.08, all programmes support db2020 cid:52
keep searching .. you dont need to use wotan to debrand your phone.. in fact most of the answers you need and files on on this website
a'right, im gunna give the best answer i can because i know how u feel as a noob.... being one myself... but i've debranded my phone about 3 times now... because i keep missing the languages i want... but none the less im happy now..
I used setools2 lite ver.1.08 and (my first time around) the central asia FS with a generic flash and some arbitrary custom pack...
A flash is essentially the code your phone runs off of. (ex. W580_R8BA024_MAIN_GENERIC_LA_RED52.mbn)
A FS is a file system and it controls what files are put on your phone. (ex. W580_R8BA024_FS_C_ASIA_RED52.fbn)
A custom pack is settings that your phone uses to coordinate everything. (ex. W580_CDA102568_7_R8A_GENERIC_C_ASIA.zip. yes it comes as a zip)
Both flash and FS must be of the same version, im not sure about the custom pack. (R8BA024 = R8BA024 = R8?)
So, in setools2 lite, i specified the correct model from the drop down list (W580)... then added the flash and FS files into the "files" space, and the custom pack in the "misc files" part, setools2lite should recognize which languages are specificed in the custom pack.
1) remove the battery, sim card, memory stick from the phone for a few seconds....
2) reinsert the battery...
3) while holding down C plug the phone into your usb port... windows should find some kind of sony flash device.... let it install the drivers (which you may have to download... which may not be windows verified or whatever)....
4) now unplug the phone... remove the battery... wait... replace the battery and plug the phone back in again (while holding down c)....
5) now press flash inside of setools2lite... (with all those files specified)
6) DO NOT disrupt this process (maybe you should have restarted your computer at the begining? to make sure u won't freeze up?)
7) when setools2lite says its done, it's done =) (it should say something about how many seconds it took... for me about 300... so 5 minutes?)
8) turn on your phone.... you may have to remove the battery and replace it before it'll turn on.... it'lll take a while as it's setting some stuff up....
9) enjoy a world free from rogers branding

nice tutorial. Im still a little confused on the main, fs and custom files. Can i only flash the main? will that allow mp3 as ringtones? will it get rid of the rogers crap?

yea, play it safe and do all 3 files, i tried doing just the custom pack and my phone refused to turn on until i put in the FS and flash as well.... i tried another custom pack with a different region but same code (R8A) and it worked without re-flashing the same flash and FS..
if you do all three, all the rogers branding will be gone... mp3 ringtones will be enabled... as will flash menus... but the shutter tone will stay... not sure why... maybe somebody can help me get rid of that too...

really to be honest.... any set will do... my first time around i used a central asian bunch... got english polish and some other stuff... but being chinese (though illierate in it) i got a hong kong pack later on.... anyway here's a link for the c_asia pack and another tutorial...

So I just need a custom pack I guess? Any suggestions on which firm ware to use R6 or R8?
I think as of R8 and on java 7.7 is used... so if u use alot of java use the R8 one... also the two packs (FS's) will have different language packs.... really its up to you.... there's no harm in flashing one and then trying the other though... =)

hy im new to this.. i have the sony 580i for at&t and i am using t-moble as teh service provider.. how does debranding effect my phone.. will it mess it up in anyway.. can there be any problems cosed by doing this... and also my phone is unlocked will there be any problems with this... please let me know
It will give you extra features like 2 free games (Sims2 and Lumines). Also you will be able to use full mp3s as a ringtone. I got one through at&t and it would only allow mp3s that were 30 seconds or less. I just did it because I wanted the fitness app, custom themes, and the "original" shortcut-key. My phone still works and is fine. Just remember to back up if any tutorials say so.Quote:

From what I've read, your phone will remain unlocked if you debrand. Supposively the shortcut key to medianet is also disabled.
Look if your phone is unlocked by a patch, then debranding will lock it again, but if your phone is full unlocked, then it will not locked again.

Ok; I've read this thread and several others trying to understand all this....obviously I'm a newbe here. I have an AT&T branded w580i that I just got. I ran into problems trying to get Libres eBook reader to work since i need to give it permission to read and write and the phone would not let me do so. After talking to both AT&T and Sony the best they could do was to give me the unlock code. I unlocked the phone but that did not fix it. So it looks like I will have to debrand the thing and this tutoral is a big help. I just have one question: Will unbranding cause problems with my AT&T service? I mean, will I still be able to use the phone like I can now while it is branded? Or will debranding screw up my ability to use my phone service through AT&T. Thanks for an help one can provide.
I'm also concerned about this... obviously the phone should still function like normal, but what about web browsing and text messaging? Does anyone else have Rogers and can tell me if there are any side effects to debranding?Quote:

I'm a newbie too, I have yet to debrand my phone, since its CID53. So far what I've learned about debranding is that it removes all the crap AT&T puts on it(mostly links to AT&T websites and medianet and AT&T startup/shutdown logos). And it will replace it with generic non-branded menu/applications and it also removes any restrictions that have been put on by AT&T. (same for all other service providers).Quote:
