W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
Hi,
This is a really cool forum!
I bought a W850 off a friend and had a few days and it suddenly got a blue tint screen and the graphics scrambled (ie. part of the bottom screen was on the top). I did a master reset and then it just went to a white screen. The phone itself works fine (I can hear all of the keytone pads and play music etc etc) but the screen shows white. Now and then it will show the blue tint screen but usually goes back to white.
I've trawled the net and found people with the same problem but don't know what the outcome was of solutions given. I also tried reflashing with XS++ but it didn't fix the problem.
Could someone please give me advise. Is this a hardware or software problem?
Thanks heaps!

that log look okies is 1 off 3 things
1 ribbon
2 top key pad

-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
Ok I'll try replace the ribbon first and see what happens. thanks!
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
i allways replace the ribbon and top keypad as when u remove the ribbon u end up breakeing the contacts on the top key pad
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
I might buy a broken w850 with a working screen and replace the whole thing.
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
sounds like a gd idear but then the ribbon my get damged when u take it apart :(
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
would be better to buy new parts as there cheap ribbons are 3 pound top keypads no more than 7 pound
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
Ok, I am in little New Zealand here so will need to have a look around.
Should I follow these instructions? Sony Ericsson W850i disassembly

Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
they would be best buddie ebay ur best bet in the end if ur not sure and dont wont to mess it up send it to se center they will do it but i do know there is a 4 week waiting list in the uk at the moe
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
I'll try it myself and if I toast it then it doesn't matter as I didn't pay much for it.
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
Well I just opened it up and found that there is a small tear in the flex cable ribbon. I will buy a new one. However when I was playing around with it I broke the keypad membrane just like you said.... nuts! I'm going to try find a broken W850 and take the top keypad membrane from that, this time being extremely carefull when removing it!!!!

Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
thought it was that if ur not sure give us a shout buddie when putting it back :)
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
I have a question for you, is it a little odd that the screen was all blue tinted and fuzzy and then it went white AFTER I did a master reset? That just seems a little odd
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
not really if it was hardwere problems with the phone
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
I've looked on ebay and found cheap flex cables but can't find any cheap top keypads (they're about 25 pounds). Do you know anywhere specific I can look? thanks

Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
hi thanks for the link! I ended up finding this: GENUINE SONY ERICSSON W850i TOP KEYPAD MEMBRANE UK CS10 on eBay, also Other Samsung Accessories, For Samsung, Mobile Phone Accessories, Mobile Home Phones (end time 09-Mar-09 18:45:00 GMT)
I am watching a damaged W850i on a new zealand auction website. apparently it was dropped and now the screen works sometimes and sometimes doesn't. Do you think the flex cable and top keypad membrane will still be alright? I would've guessed the lcd being the problem so I can just replace it with my own..... it's not going for much so I might just give it a go and if it doesn't work then I'll have 2 dead w850s and buy the parts of ebay! :D
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
i think in all fairness ur goning to end up buying a nother problem and waisting ur monine as if u try to take the ribbon and key pad off that phone u are watching u may break it if it was me i would just change the 2 parts i said to do and as long as there put back on prply and u dont break the lcd all will be fine

Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
Hi again,
Well I got the parts and stuck them all back in but no luck. It started blinking a white screen which may have been some problem from when I played around with the firmware before I started this thread. Anyways I tried playing around with the firmware again and I think I may have finally bricked the phone. It won't even turn on now or connect to SEUS or XS++. This is the final part of the XS++ log before it stopped working (I updated the GDFS with one from the downloads section of this website and XS++ says it worked fine????). Any ideas??? thanks

Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
I just read on a forum that you might know how to fix it (I Killed My W850i with Wrong Gdfs...dead W850i....repair Gdfs.. - SE-NSE Forums - Sony Ericsson Forum and Community). Ok so I didn't know the GDFS was unique to my phone but at least I made a backup of it right!!!!!
So could you please give me some instructions on how to get my backed up GDFS back onto the phone eventhough it won't turn on and won't connect to XS++. I think after that I need to get the firmware sorted out (how do I pick which to use and what does the filesystem mean)?
Thank you so much for your help so far - I wish I knew as much as you.

Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod

after I put the new parts in it turned on and just blinked a white screen on and off every few seconds and I couldn't turn it off without pulling the battery out. Does this suggest a hardware or software problem?

I did backup my GDFS so will try this when I get home from work. What do you mean by con? Will it write to my W850i even if it won't turn on be recognised by SEUS or xs++?? When I plug it in to charge nothing seems to happen? thanks
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
con/ means conect ur better to wright it back with se tool buddie as xs wont work
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
ok I will give that a go after work. Can you tell me what you think the problem was when it would turn on and blink white on and off? Is that software or hardware problem?
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
after u wright back the gdfs thats for that phone if it still shows as a k700 its a hardwere fault double check the ribbon is on was it used parts or new ?
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
used parts - i bought 2 flex cables so maybe i'll give the other one a go if nothing works.
So after I write back my original GDFS should it say k700 or w850i?
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
also how do I decide which is the right firmware to use?
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
1st off all lets get it working b4 worying about flashing it did u get a new top keypad as well
-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
Yes I think that is a wise idea. I bought a new used top keypad as well from the same seller 4one someone a rather. It's a shop in Burnley.
So when I get home I will download se tool lite and try copy my back up gdfs back to my phone. So from what I understand: I hold down 2 and 5 when I connect the phone to se tool lite and then copy the gdfs.
thanks

Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod

-
Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod

Re: W850 scrambled blue tint screen then wsod
Hi Phil, disregard my last post. I flashed a main, fs and custom and now the phone is back to where it was before. It basically just turns on and flashes a white screen on and off every few seconds (it seems like it is actually turning on and off because when I plug it into the usb without holding down any keys it connects and disconnects as the screen goes from white to black). I have done an identify:
