Some Basic Questions (K800i)
I'm new in this flashing thing.
I'm thinking of buying a K800i. Later I want to put some linux on it. (I saw a cool video at youtube that linked here.)
I'm wondering if all functions of the K800i are preserved. i.e. is UMTS available after putting the new OS on it?
Does the camera work? The radio? SMS/Telephone? ;)
Can you install PDF readers or such things?
I'm really excited to learn more about this.
PS: If my english seams strange - I'm from the continent ... :D
Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
what are you talking about?
NO you cannot put linux on it. it only works wits the se os (i don`t know how they call it) but it`s impossible to put linux on it
Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
I think the video of linux on the K800i is simply a new start up screen and shut down screen. You cannot install linux on a k800i.

i agree. so far none of the se phones support linux, right?
Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
You can mod your phone graphics to make it look like it has linux installed on it... But you cannot install real linux core OS on it... It is java based phone and it uses the oficial firmwares released by Sony Ericsson as an "operating system"... So in short it is "OSless" :), Anyway after modding the phone will work normally (if modding is done preperly) - there is no a reason why it won't...
About the PDF readers and etc... There are plenty of Java applications for this phone... It can get PDF reader installer, and DOC or XLS reader/editor too. But don't expect much of a power and office experience from this phone... :)
Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
hey ive modded my phone so when i press * it turns into a ferarri!!!
You tube specials. Dont you think that if you could but linux, windows or mac on your phone you wouldnt be sat behind a piece of metal 60x15x40 that you call a pc!!
Im sorry but this has tickled me.
I might go and try to make my phone look like its booting into Vista, then i can play minesweeper!!

Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
Well your phone can be customized the way you want it... There are no much limitations on customizing the user interface... But the core "OS" - firmware, cannot be changed much. There are patches that can be applied to change or improve it's functionality or reability, but not the whole firmware can be changed. :)

Have a nice day!
Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
I asked if there is ANY se phone that could run on linux?
Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
Thank you for some of your answers.
I saw this video @ youtube: YouTube - modding the k800i
So you say, the basic OS of the phone is untouched and so anything will work after a correct debranding?Good to know.
What do I have to do, to make my phone look like this in the video? Are there performance or any other issues with debranded phones?
An other questions about the phone: Is the joystick as bad as on the K750i? (Doesn't react/is defact)
Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
That is still the Sony Ericsson firmwire, debranding is simply removing your service providers logo of the phone and replacing it with Sony Ericsson original firmwire.
What that person has done is created/downloaded a theme someone has made and flashed a new menu onto the phone.
Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
Ah, ok. I thought that it is possible to replace the whole firmware. But ok. If the changes to the phone are only theme based, this will lower my risk to brick my phone (i hope ;) ).
Do themes slow down the phone, or can you replace the std. theme in a way that the new one works as fast as the original?
And, does anyone know where to get that theme?
Re: Some Basic Questions (K800i)
the OS of the phone is indeed untouched. only the icons are changed and some other files.
a debranded phone works as good (if not BETTER) then a branded phone
i don't know what you are talking about on the joystick. i had a K750 and i know have a k800 and i didn't had any problems with the joysticks. just be carefull and clean them sometimes
to do all that with your phone you will need FAR manager of XS++ (only for CID52 or lower)
