W580i with 8GB SanDisk not quite working
Hello!
I just plugged in my newly purchased 8GB SanDisk into my W580i. I read people have it working correctly. Mine does partly. When showing the phone status, only 4GB appear as free memory. When connected to the PC via USB however, Windows Explorer shows 8GB free.
I mainly want to use the 8GB card for mp3's, can I still use the whole 8GB though the phone only shows 4GB free?
I already used XS++ to debrand my phone. Using SEUS to upgrade the firmware didn't do anything. I upgraded though SEUS said I don't need to. No changes here.
Is there a way to make the phone show 8GB free?
Can I use the 8GB even though 4GB shown only?
TIA
Karsten

I had read about this somewhere, and it said that this is OK. Phone shows only 4GB cuz it deals with the stick as if it were actually 2x4GB rather than 1x8GB. It also said that if you fill the first 4GB phone will switch to the other 4GB and show another 4GB free (e.g. if you fill up 5GB out of 8GB, the phone will show 3GB free). You could try this :) .
Re: W580i with 8GB SanDisk not quite working
The W580 support M2 memory stick up to 4Gb. It will ever show 4Gb as maximum limit, also using a memory with higher capacity.
Re: W580i with 8GB SanDisk not quite working
OK I copied ~2GB onto the 8GB card.
In Settings a.k.a. phone status there's still 4GB shown. It seems to be some algorithmic problem. Maybe the firmware just used an unsigned 32bit int for showing the free GB so anything from 2^32 = 4294967296 bytes = 4194304 KB = 4096 MB might get capped... (divide by 1024 not 1000!)
If you go to your file manager and display storage status there, the correct # of MB are shown!

How much I heard it starts showing when you have 4 GB on the card.
It doesn`t start from 0, but from 4 GB by 8 GB card.
Nice day
Re: W580i with 8GB SanDisk not quite working
My 8GB M2 (which I got just now) works exactly the same way on my K810. So it's perfectly fine.
@ jasmin: Are you thanking yourself with another username all the time?
Re: W580i with 8GB SanDisk not quite working
looks like that haaahahahahahahaha ^^ how stupid lol.
I had a 8GB M2, but it made my phone laggy under R6BC002, I sold it and got a 4gb version working flawlessly. I dunno how 8GB would work on newer FW's...
Re: W580i with 8GB SanDisk not quite working
Now that I've tested it some more, it actually works faster than a 4GB stick. Somehow it does. And overall works like a charm, if not for the fact that phone can't show actual free space if bigger than 4GB. This isn't an issue for me, since I already filled up more than 5GB. And it should't be an issue for anybody else either, cause think about it, if you intend leaving 4GB or more free, then why do you need an 8GB M2 anyway, right? Get 4GB or something.
Re: W580i with 8GB SanDisk not quite working
Wait, so how does 8GB work? The phone sees it as a 2X4GB card?
So if I stored all of my music on the "first 4GB card", then my W580 can see the files there just fine, problem free. Now if I have to store additional files, then the files would be on the "second 4GB card" since the "first 4GB card" is already full.
Example: Say I'm listening to Linkin Park which is located under the "first 4GB card" and if I decided to listen to Simple Plan which is located in the "second 4GB card", my W580 can find Simple Plan without any problems.

Not exactly 2x4GB (as I indeed had said before). There is only one 8GB volume, the only problem with the phone is that it doesn't show real free space, if it's bigger than 4GB. I.e. when you have more than 4GB of free space, phone always shows there are 4096MB free. In this case the only way to know for sure is to put your M2 in a reader and plug it into the PC. Other than that phone works flawlessly with 8GB M2, at least my K810 does.

Ah I get it now. So it'll still be able to find my Simple Plan fies and work without any problems. Only downside is that it'll read the free space wrong if there's over 4GB free.
