why is it failing ? is the phone bad?

Probably the FS is corrupted. You can check it with a program called babecheck.

Is it worth going there? I mean if it's corrupted, can it be revived?

If the FS(the *.fbn file) is corrupted, then you cannot do anything with it. The only option to download a good FS for your phone/region.
So, again, I suggest you to check the FS firmware file with babeckeck, and you will know if there is something wrong with FS or with phone.

K790_R8BF003_MAIN_GENERIC_EV_RED52.mbn is OK

but

K790_R8BF003_FS_AMERICA_2_RED52.fbn is bad

Yep, the FS is corrupted...
What language(s) you want to use? If English only, then you can use ANY FS. Or you can flash some older FS(the MAIN can remain the current one). For ex. R8BC004, R8BA024, R1KG001.
Another solution is to send a PM to Top Sony, and ask him to upload a working copy of this file.
