If you have a flash menu, and put it on your phone, does the menu have to be exactly like your own? the same icons, etc.
If you put a theme with a timer icon on a phone with no timer,
how will that work? will it work at all? and the other way?

Am not sure what your saying, if it has a timer icon on a phone with no timer, how will it work. Like if you have a flash menu with the radio icon and the phone doesn't have radio it simply will not work, icon will stil by on the menu.
If you have flash menu without for examle radio icon you need to make shortcut for d-pad or soft buttons. You should always test flash menus before installing, there are few very screwed menus on the net. Simply copy .swf file to phone or memory card and preview it

how do you make shortcuts?
Which phone do you have? For navigation buttons (d-pad or joystick) go to menu>settings>shortcuts. If you also have Activity menu button (like on k750, w810...) you can add new shortcut there
