Hi all,
Are there any success story of anybody flashing a phone in Linux. I tried with Setool Lite through Wine, the applications starts, it's ok, but the DCU-60 is not recognized when I connect it to the PC. I didn't tried XS++ or far manager. Are there other applications for Linux?
I run Ubuntu, and when I flashed my phone I had to install Microsoft Windows.
I am just curious if anybody did it on Linux.

I tried several times to install the DCU-60 drivers in Wine, but it cannot be done because Wine only accepts the USB that the linux kernel accepts. The linux kernel recognize the phone as an external data storage. (Actually you have access only to the M2 card).
So, IMO, there is not possible to use wine to flash my phone.
I'm searching for alternatives...
why you dont want to install windows? there is no problem with drivers... you will only install it and you are ready to flash...:cool:
If someone does not have enough money to buy Windows, or doesn't has friends with Windows, I believe they will be interested for a Linux solution. (I personally have installed Windows, but others could not have this possibility)
Also, I personally think it would be nice to have the possibility to flash the firmware in other operating systems.
I tried using AT commands, but I can only control some aspects of the phone, I cannot flash the phone with AT commands.
The conclusion: I didn't find any way to flash the firmware in Linux.
But I found some interesting things you can do: fully use the AT commands to make calls, backup you agenda, write/receive sms from the PC, synchronize calendar, etc.
You can even use the phone as a remote control through the bluetooth.
I will create another thread with all the cool things one could do with Linux and a Sony-Ericsson phone.

Not that it helps if you don't want to install Windows, but you may be able to do the phone hacking from a virtual machine. XS++ and setool2lite seem to work fine on my Mac with VMWare Fusion.
Thanks for the suggestion. I already tried this with qemu and kvm and it didn't work for me. The USB driver used by kvm/qemu is the one provided by the Linux kernel and the real USB is virtualized into another USB device that has the capabilities provided by the Linux kernel. The windows drivers cannot extend the capabilities provided by the Linux kernel.
I didn't tried with WMWare, but I think it uses the Linux kernel also for its devices.
Did you flash your phone using VMWare? Did the XS++ or Setool recognize/identified your phone?
This solution would not be a true solution because, you must install windows in the virtualization image, you don't install it on your PC, but it's basically almost the same and you still need a Windows CD.
I haven't flashed my phone (yet) but I did upload some flash themes using XS++. XS++ and setool2lite both recognize the phone and can query its properties.
You're right that it's not a great solution, but at least it means you don't have to reboot. If you're hardcore you could check the se-nse forums. I think there may be some example code for doing some of this stuff available in the r&d forum, or somebody might give you some if you ask nicely.
Is there any free virtual machine for VMVare Player available that would work with flashing on Linux?
