w580 select network

my daughter has the W580i on Virgin but quite often it asks to "select network" . She then can't make/ recieve calls, texts etc. Can anyone tell me what the fault is?
It is firmware R8BA024 and the other numbers are CXC1123362 and 071010 .
Can someone also tell me if I need to upgrade firmware and how to do it?

the network coverage at your residence is poor, there won't be anything wrong with the phone
