Sorry to be such a noob, i've had a good read through the forums and it seems the phone CAN be debranded from Virgin and unlocked...but i'd just like someone to clarify this for me...

It can be debranded, simply download the GENERIC main and FS and flash it on using Xs++ or something like this. It can also be unlocked, patched unlock, but only works when it is CID 52.
How do i know if the phone is CID 53 or CID 52??
Is there anyway of knowing before you buy?

CID = This "number" defines the version of SE's protection present in the phone.New CIDs are deployed from time to time, for the sole reason of preventing them from beeing unlocked/flashed/tampered with by non-SE service tools. Current CIDs in use by SE are 29/36/37/49/51. SE-based LG/Sharp phones use the same system (but different versions). The OTP (One Time Programmable memory) and EROM of a phone might be protected by different CIDs, usually the case in newer K600s/K608s.

Are S500 phones generally CID52? have there been any cases on the forum where there has been an S500 which is CID53..
If the phone is CID53 is it impossible to debrand and unlock?
I'm used to just typing in a system code and unlocking the phone from there...so this is all new to me.
Yes, generally they are cid52.
Cid 53 phones you can debrand with JdFlasher, but you can`t unlock them for now.
