Thumbs up LISTEN UP AMERICANS!!! (Those who wanna unlock their W580i from AT&T)

These days I have been looking hard:mad: for solutions to unlock my W580i bought from at&t. Finally I found this surprising and unbelievable thing on at&t's forum. Thanks to the guy named jkudlacz. Here is the link to the original text: http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=sonyericsson&message.id=34441&que ry.id=143673#M34441

    ORIGINAL TEXT BY jkudlacz:
You have Sony Ericsson W580i phone. After being a customer for 90 days you can call them and ask them for Subsidy Unlock Code.
That code will allow you to use your cell phone with any SIM card, which means that you can use it with AT&T, T-Mobile, as well as Vodafone, Orange, 3 and any other GSM provider world wide.

Steps to follow to unlock the W580i. Those instructions will allow you to unlock your phone to use with any GSM provider.

First find out your IMEI number by entering following number on your home screen of your cell
    *#06#
Your cell will display your number (for example, 01127100-05xxxx-x-xx)

With that number you should call AT&T if you are using your AT&T cell phone all you do is dial 611.

Then tell the customer representative that you want your SUBSIDY Unlock Code.

They will ask you for your IMEI number, after you give it to them they will give you a SUBSIDY Unlock Code
    (for example, 966332833420xxxx)

After you receive your SUBSIDY Unlock Code you will have to enter it into your phone. To do so follow these instructions.

How to enter your Subsidy Unlock Code to unlock your phone from AT&T.

Those instructions are almost self explanatory but it took me 2 tries to succeed. Keep in mind that if you enter Subsidy Unlock Code incorrectly 5 times then your phone will permanently become locked to AT&T, therefore make sure you write down your unlock code correctly and also when you enter it into your headset make sure you press correct buttons. Each number will be masked with * as soon as you enter it so you will not be able to see if you entered wrong digit by accident. Also last advice after putting non AT&T sim card and powering up your phone make sure that you slide your phone before you try to press any buttons.

Please remember that your screen will display incorrect SIM message while you doing those steps. After you follow those steps you will get to a screen with 3 different options and each option will have an image of a lock next to it. 2 of those lock will be unlocked (unlocked image) and 1 will be locked (locked image) that is the one you want to select and then enter your SUBSIDY Unlock Code.

Good Luck, I spend a lot of time on the internet different forums and Google to find those instructions.

    Sony Ericsson
    -Insert non-AT&T SIM card
    -Power on the handset
-Press the left Arrow (< button (this is the << button under AT&T logo, also known as PREV or REW button)
-Press the star (*) button twice
-Press the left Arrow (< button (this is the << button under AT&T logo, also known as PREV or REW button)
    -display will indicate "ME Lock"
    -wait approximately 3 seconds
-the display will indicate "Network" and a picture of a closed lock
    Press Yes
    -the display will indicate "Unlock?"
    -Press Yes
-the display will indicate "Enter NCK"
    -Enter the SIM Unlock code
    -Press yes
-Then handset will display "Network" and a picture of an open lock for
three seconds and will then revert to the main display
-The handset is now successfully unlocked

    havent tried other walkman phones.
    follow these instructions:
    -Insert non-AT&T SIM card
    -Power on the handset
-Press the left Arrow (< button (this is the << button under AT&T logo, also known as PREV or REW button)
-Press the star (*) button twice
-Press the left Arrow (< button (this is the << button under AT&T logo, also known as PREV or REW button)
if it shows "Network" and a picture of a closed lock, then it works on other phones. enter "NCK" to unlock it finally.
call and ask your provider for the code.
ANY LOCKED PHONES CAN BE UNLOCKED WITH "NCK". different phones may need different unlocking procedures.

Hi there. So my interest is less in unlocking so that I can change providers, and more in debranding so that I can get rid of the ridiculous AT&T Mall functions. In unlocking the phone, does it also restore the original factory presets?

    thanks!

sorry, i saw your post late:(
unlocking a phone will just unlock the network lock, it does NOT change the firmware, your phone will still have the icon of at&t mall and links to at&t's website...so after u get the unlock code from at&t and unlock your phone, u need to flash the firmware of your phone so that u can get rid of the annoying at&t one.
unlocking and flashing(or debranding) are 2 different things.

    good luck pal.:)
